Come learn the fundamentals of Soda Firing with Uncle Paul’s at an amazing Atmospheric Firing Center in San Gregorio!
This is a hands-on workshop designed for potters who are new to atmospheric firing, as well as those with experience looking to explore our range of materials. Together, we’ll load work into a Soda Gas Kiln and dive into the art and science behind this unique process. Throughout the workshop, we’ll cover clay bodies, wadding, and the chemistry of soda firing. Each booking includes 12 cubic feet of kiln space and access to our onsite flashing slips, glazes, and oxides.
Age Requirement: We kindly ask that only participants aged 18 and over register for the workshop. The studio in San Gregorio does not accept individuals under 18 for this session.
Experience: Beginner wheel throwing or handbuilding experience is required.
Participation: Please note this is not a pick-up and drop-off firing service. Participants are expected to assist with preparation, loading, most of the firing process, unloading, and clean-up.
Day 1 - Saturday, July 25th 2-5pm - Workshop at Uncle Paul’s
Orientation and brief introduction to soda firing and high fire clay. We will distribute high fire clay and learn how and where to use it in the studio! Can it be recycled along with our midfire clays? No! We’ll go over rules, guidelines, and timelines for when bisqueware needs to be finished, and answer any questions participants may have.
Day 2 - Saturday, September 26th 9am-3pm - Kiln Loading in San Gregorio
Meet at Uncle Paul’s and carpool to San Gregorio, or meet there at 9am. Address will be provided in our first workshop. We’ll start the day with an overview of the process, then move into glazing, wadding, and loading the kiln. Enjoy a day doing pottery in nature, pack a lunch, or bring snacks to share.
Day 3 - Saturday, October 3rd 9am-3pm - Kiln Unloading in San Gregorio
Participants will help unload the kiln, discuss results, techniques, and surfaces. We’ll finish by resetting the kiln site together and tidying the workspace. The clean-up requires everyone to bring and wear a mask. Pack a lunch, or bring snacks to share.
More Info!
Fees include instruction, use of tools and equipment, bisque firing available only for pieces intended for soda firing, and one bag of high fire clay (cone 10).
